Use of Griffin's Yield Model for the Gulf of Mexico Shrimp Fishery!

چکیده
For analyzing the harvest of the Gulf of Mexico shrimp fishery, Griffin et al. (1976) have developed an equation that relates shrimp yield to freshwater discharge of the Mississippi River and fishing effort of Gulf shrimp vessels. The yield equation (referred to as Griffin's equation) is a modified Spillman production function (Heady and Dillon 1972). The Spillman function had its origin in agriculture where it was derived to predict the results of fertilizer experiments on tobacco yield in North Carolina. An important feature of the function is that it allows for environmental considerations in predicting yield. The modified form ofthe equation proposed by Griffin et al. (1976) is:

During the 1960s and 1970s, a significant groundfish fishery existed in the Gulf of Mexico. There were about 50 vessels in the fishery which targeted a groundfish complex that consisted of over 170 species, dominant of which were croaker, spot, seatrout, cutlassfish, sea catfish, porgies, perch, drums, hake, and butterfish. The primary directed fishery was for the pet food, harvesting 50,000 to...

OR RE CT ED P Abstract The Pacific shrimp fishery is the most economically important and ecologically impactful fishery in Mexico. Strong export markets have had a tremendous influence on the technological development and structure of this fishery. This article describes the historical development, current status, ecological impacts and management of the open ocean trawling component of the shr...
متن کاملFleet behavior is responsive to a large-scale environmental disturbance: Hypoxia effects on the spatial dynamics of the northern Gulf of Mexico shrimp fishery
The northwestern Gulf of Mexico shelf experiences one of the largest seasonal hypoxic zones in the western hemisphere. Hypoxia (dissolved oxygen, DO ≤ 2.0 mg·L-1) is most severe from May to August during the height of the Gulf shrimp fishery, but its effects on the fishery are not well known. Prior studies indicate that hypoxia alters the spatial dynamics of shrimp and other species through hab...
